What Does It Take to Be Well? YOU!

Remember how Dorothy didn’t know that she had the power all along to get back home to Kansas? Turns out all she had to do was CLICK HER HEELS. What is the magic ingredient in changing your health for the better? YOU. You’ve had it all along! A lot of times clients get really excited at the beginning of sessions and think the coach is going to magically transform their life and their problems will just melt away. It doesn’t exactly work like this, although you can and will experience RADICAL transformation if you jump in the river and GO WITH THE FLOW of the coaching process. Your coach or therapist DOES play a crucial role in your healing journey. This is true, and you should be excited. A compassionate, non-judgmental relationship with a coach or therapist goes a LONG WAY toward change and healing. HOWEVER, the most radical, beautiful, change happens because of YOU! This is a good thing, trust me. When you realize YOU have the power to change your life, this is where the real MAGIC HAPPENS. How does change happen then? And why does it feel like work? When you change for other people – to please them – or when you change out of FEAR – so you won’t feel humiliated on the beach – you are changing for EXTERNAL reasons, and that, my friend, is HARD WORK. In fact, it feels like you are carrying the weight of the world on you. Who wants to do that FOREVER? When you change because you LOVE yourself, and VALUE yourself, change FEELS GREAT and EFFORTLESS often. Here’s a tip, figure out what your very HIGHEST IDEAL is, and change FOR THAT REASON. When you change a health habit because you desire so strongly to stay true to and be there for your VISION – what you VALUE, YOUR HIGHEST IDEALS – change is not only effortless, it’s enjoyable, because you are FOCUSING ON YOUR VISION, AND SEEING IT COME TO FRUITION. Real change also happens when we build a sense of self-confidence, that yes, I CAN DO THIS. Self-confidence comes by achieving, small, attainable goals. One…goal…at…a…time. This is another way a coach can really help you along your JOURNEY. Yes, there are so many benefits to wellness coaching. But the most important benefit of all is that you get to meet your amazing, powerful SELF in the process. And your POWERFUL SELF, my friend, can do and be anything she wants. Just look within, believe in yourself, and click your heels…

Change: You Can Do It!

“Change, but start slowly, because direction is more important than speed.”

~ Paulo Coelho

Changing health behaviors for good takes time, it is process. Change happens in taking small steps toward your goal, and in months: 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year. A lot of us don’t realize that. We get so down on ourselves when we don’t change a habit instantly, where, in reality, it is not realistic to change overnight. Change is a process. It is more of a spiral than a straight line and actually there are six steps of change that most people go through and each step is as important as the other step.

One of the steps is contemplation. You are contemplating and thinking about changing and, you think to yourself “Okay, I am gonna start exercising more.” You might start surfing the net, looking up articles on yoga, walking, or running groups, and you might be thinking to yourself “Okay, well, I have researched a lot and I have maybe even tested out a few classes or I bought some exercise videos, but I have not really done anything consistently yet.” You may think you are still in the same place you were before, or that “I am not changing.” But, in reality, you are changing because again, remember, change is a process, there are different stages of change, and each stage of change is just as relevant as the other. Action is important, yes, absolutely. But so are contemplation, preparation, and maintenance. Be proud of yourself, know you’re doing all you can do with what resources and skills you currently have, and remember that change takes time.

The most important thing you can do when changing a health habit or a lifestyle is to stay positive and not get down on yourself when you are trying to lose weight or quit smoking, or change any kind of other health habit that you have that maybe has been following you around for a number of years and — the most important thing is just reach out and stay connected. “Connection is the currency of wellness,” is a quote by John Travis. Most of us change and heal the best in the presence of others. Support from a wellness coach, and or a group or certain individuals are crucial to your journey. Of course there are many people that change on their own, but if you really want to speed up the process of change and be most effective, it is really important to connect with other people. This could actually be the most important thing that you do in terms of your wellness goals, to reach out and connect with others going through something similar to you, like a group wellness coaching format, or by seeking out a wellness coach.

Whatever your health goals are, you can achieve them and change for good. Whether you are trying to lose weight or quit smoking, or change any kind of other health habit that you have that maybe has been following you around for a number of years, the most important thing is to just reach out, stay connected, stay positive, and keep walking down the path. Reach out to your family, reach out to your friends, and reach out to a group of people with a similar story, or a professional to guide you along your way. Be proactive, creative, keep the faith, and remember that change is on your side. You can find the focus that this will happen for me; it is just a matter of time. Change is inevitable. This is one of the secrets that wellness coaches know. It is inevitable that you will change, because actually, change is the one constant in life. Not only do people change all the time, and that means that you can change as well. Change is the only guarantee in life. But change actually is on your side, and that is a new way to think about it. I hope you realize that your health is really precious, and that you come to value it again or for the first time. I hope you realize that taking care of yourself is really not as hard as many of us think it is. The goal is to reconnect with your body, and step back into your power and your life. You can do this. Wellness coaching can help you along the way.

“Change now, while you still can. Change now because you can, change now because it is the right thing to do. Change now because there is no right, no left, no time left, no space left. Only you. Change”

Try Wellness Coaching and Keep Your Insurance Rates Down

Health insurance rates have skyrocketed. Businesses have developed wellness programs to keep rising insurance rates down. They have also been requiring medical tests for employees to work as incentives to stay well, or as penalty points if you don't pass their tests.

For some people who have chronic conditions, requiring medical tests (and passing them) may not be so ideal. This is yet another reason to try wellness coaching to learn new skills to break old health habits that no longer serve you, and maybe lower your insurance rates as well. Join us on www.ConnektWell.com for affordable group wellness coaching teleclasses and support, or contact me for individual wellness coaching sessions, or group wellness coaching classes if you live in Portland, OR.

You can change for good, and wellness coaching can help!

Why Group Wellness Coaching?

Top 5 Fitness Trends for 2010

Fitness is still hot. Though Americans are more overweight than ever, and obesity is on the rise (72 million of us are now considered obese), new ways to stay fit are more diverse than ever as well. Here are the top five trends for 2010:

1.Mind-Body Fitness
Pilates and yoga are here to stay. People are becoming more aware of the mind-body connection and how controlling stress influences health and fitness levels. Some other recent aerobic hybrids include Cy-Yo, a combination of cycling and yoga, YogaFit, a combination of yoga, strength training and core building, and Piloxing, a combination of Pilates and boxing. You can often find yoga at the gym as well as some of these other programs. You may have to pay a nominal additional fee to take something like Pilates, but it’s cheaper than taking it privately. In addition to stress reduction and core training, mind-body programs are great for adding flexibility, adding cardio, and building lean muscle mass depending on the program.

2.Core-Based Training
Strengthening the “core” is a central theme to many mind-body programs like yoga and Pilates, as well as some equipment like kettlebells and the balance ball. Balance balls and kettlebells are relatively cheap at around $30 for basic sets. The core consists of the abdominal, hip, and leg muscles. Having a strong core can help relieve and/or prevent back injuries. Another core-based specialty workout is dance. Dance classes naturally focus on the core, in addition to being a great source of cardio. All the rage right now are Zumba and Bollywood dance. Ballroom dance, Afro-Cuban, and hip-hop are popular as well. Dance classes are relatively cheap at $7 - $10 a class, and are a great overall workout as has been publicized by shows like “Dancing with the Stars.”

3.Activity-Based Video Games
With gaming as popular as it is, it’s no wonder that it has wandered into the realm of fitness as well.
Especially great for motivating kids to take an interest in fitness, technology-based exergames like Dance Dance Revolution and Wii Fit are all the rage. Exergaming is moderately priced from $40 - $200. Wii Fit offers balance and BMI testing, as well as 40 different activities such as strength training, aerobics, and even yoga. Blurring the lines between entertainment and exercise seems like a natural progression in the overall pattern of combining workouts and trends in the fitness industry.

4.Back To Basics
Many people are getting back to the basics and just walking outdoors and lifting free weights at home. People are realizing that fitness can be attained under any circumstances. These “budget-friendly” workouts can be to tied to another trend: functional fitness. The goal behind functional fitness is to prepare your body for real life situations. An example of this “bang for your buck” functional fitness trend again would be kettlebells. Here we have core training, and a whole body workout that covers many of the major muscle groups, and it conditions your body as well. It can be done from the comfort and affordability of your home. Populations like baby boomers are interested in working out more than ever. Although other trends like bootcamp at the gym are still very popular, baby boomers are looking for ways to incorporate fitness that will benefit them the most without breaking the bank. Functional fitness and going back to basics are two just ways that don’t necessarily require a gym membership.

5.Wellness Coaches/Online Personal Trainers
Along the lines of mind/body fitness, hiring a wellness coach is gaining ground. Wellness coaches support people’s efforts in fitness on all fronts including diet information and exercise motivation. Due to tough financial times, some people are opting to just browse online for information from personal trainers or wellness coaches as well. Although nothing beats having someone to talk you through those 6am treadmill runs. Another trend is to hire a group personal trainer to work with several individuals at once and share the cost. Hiring a coach or trainer varies, but the average rate is $50-$75 an hour. With an interest in mind-body workouts on the rise, hiring a wellness professional is a natural progression of connecting the dots between fitness and an overall healthy lifestyle.

be well,
